Summer is here.
Santa is only 14 sleeps away.
The year is almost over.

In terms of the year that has been, we couldn't be more thrilled! What began as a few idle moments chit chat quickly swelled into overflowing sketch pads, late night market stall practice runs through to the current dream factory we hope one day to actually have in a factory - instead of the kitchen table/ shed/ spare bed. But Rome wasn't built in a day now was it?

We've spent the year trialling ideas and concepts, listening patiently to nay-sayers, smacking head-on into brick walls, receiving the most wonderful feedback from you all and ultimately coming to the decision that this is where we want to be. We feel so happy to have been able to bring our dreams to fruition and that so many of you feel the same way. And we are enormously thankful to you for your support!

We get asked lots of questions about why we do what we do. More often than we would like, we find ourselves converting people to buying from and supporting local, independent artisans - we'd much rather have hordes of people already doing that. So here's a snapshot of what's floating around in our headspace. These are the things that matter to us and perhaps it will gel with you too:

We don't mass produce. We offer timeless quality.
You can easily head to a multi-national chain store and purchase items that are possibly similar to what we create. And you won't be alone. Thousands of others will have the exact same item sitting on their couch/ floor/ bed and you may even wonder if it looks better in their home. But you can consolidate your fears in the knowledge that you didn't have to pay much. And of course you can throw this slightly-ripped-at-the-seam one out and get something more "on trend" in a couple of weeks.

We have been practicing our craft for a long time and strive to be the most professional producers we can be.
You go to work, you do a particular task and you get paid for your time. How much is an hour of your professional time worth? We may not have an artisans university crest hanging on our wall, but we simply can't get by if we only charge for materials. So although we call ourselves Daydreamers, please know that we are the best at it. Your money is paying for the best item, made in the best time by the best Daydreamers around.

We want to help you create memories.
Just seeing Grandma's old blanket brings a smile to our face. She made it many moons ago. We used it to hold a teddy's picnic under the kitchen table when we were 5. Mum used it before us to snuggle up under with a handsome beau while out at a drive in movie. We hope to hand it on, along with its memories to our kids so they can make use of it and create their own memories with Grandma's blanket. We create pieces that will hopefully become your future heirlooms. Others will help to create future memories told over a cup of tea or late at night with snorts of laughter from the generations to come.

Our daydreaming creations are made with integrity, to the best of our ability, so that they will last many lifetimes and be just as loved in each as they are in the first.

In the new year we hope to be even more adventurous with our daydreams. We have a number of new pieces such as wall art and hangings and newly finished wooden items. We hope to bring some of these to the last of our markets this year (keep up with that on Facebook), but we will have them online for 2014.
Well, with that box of super juicy awesomeness we knocked out a few jars of strawberry jam.

We don't have any secret recipes. We just followed this recipe and a few hints from all those wandering in and out of the kitchen as we went.

The first step was to chop up all our strawberries for the 1kg weigh-in. But blow us down, after gathering a box full of them, when it came to the weigh-in, we were short! It seems that it's simply impossible to chop up a strawberry and not taste one or two along the way...bit like peeling prawns. And with so many people stopping by to check out what was going on it's easy to see how one or two lead to 20 or 30.

After a quick wander through the paddock and pick of the bush lemon tree we were ready to go.

When we were younger we'd ride our horses most school holidays looking for something to entertain us. We'd generally pick a few lemons on the way and compete with our cousins over who could eat it without pulling a "cat's bum face" (yukky sour lemon face for those not with the lingo). First person to pull a face often ended up with the job of getting off to open/close all the gates for everybody else.

We pretty much followed the recipe (with a few minor reductions in measurements) from then on.

Like all the old girls in the family, Mum had a stash of recycled glass jars ready for just this occasion. Her recommendation is to only keep the pretty ones or those that are just perfect for a particular purpose otherwise you'll be over run with jars.

What she didn't have was a funnel. Lucky for us any stray drips were quickly swiped clean by stray fingers passing by.

Just as the recipe noted, this was a rather runny jam although our funky measurements could've had something to do with that. But the executive decision was made that anyone not keen on runny jam could use it as a gourmet dessert topping.

We've tried both options - jam and icecream topping - and don't mind saying that it was sweet as for both.

Cringe?
We've always loved them...well not all of us.
The gorgeous costumes, hair, accessories, sets, music, dancing and script. Love it, the innocence of them. Of course a critical eye would notice the racist and misogynistic themes, but perhaps we're just superficial.
Either way one part of them that always captures us is the kiss. There is always at least one Kiss Moment. You know the ones - those long, lingering looks, close enough to touch yet oh so restrained, the lean in, soft or demanding but always full of 'oh thank god!'.

“No, I don't think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.”
Gone With the Wind (1939) – Rhett Butler (Clark Gable)

These ones in particular will probably end up making an appearance on our art wall sometime or other. Could even create His and Hers bedroom art...maggie+boydhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352791368009376761noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848225724177883712.post-3989975027859139852013-09-16T05:10:00.001-07:002013-09-16T05:10:12.421-07:00Sweet As StrawberriesToday we went on a wander and ended up visiting some family friends who own and run a strawberry farm.

There were subtle hints right from the get-go that things were not as they should be. Weeds were growing amongst the vines. Super large, juicy strawbs were thick and fast along every row. All the picker's trollies were parked up.
These things may not sound like much but at a time when strawberry farms should be in full swing sending truckloads of strawberry punnets off to market, it really means that something is not right. And it soon became apparent why. These farmers are being offered 40cents - yes that's $0.40 - a punnet for their strawberries. Are you serious?! How can you make a living off 40cents a punnet?
And the answer is you can't.
It costs much more than 40cents a punnet to grow, harvest and package... and therefore they have decided not to. All their wonderfully sweet, juicy strawberries are being left to rot.

We were given a box and told to pick as many as we wanted, so quickly got to work. When we checked over our shoulder to see how the two-foot tall family member was going we realised just how luscious these little beauties were. With juice running down her chin and two of the largest strawberries we've laid eyes on gently being squished between her little fingers, we also realised that she wasn't going to be any help with filling the box up. In less than 3minutes we had gathered over 2 kilos and barely made a dent in the glut of strawberries before us.

After providing the little hands with a few roadies we jumped back in the car and headed home to show off our hunter-gathering skills to the rest of the family and relay the message about how hard our local strawberry farmers are doing it.

I guess what we're trying to tell you with this is that the agricultural industry as a whole is doing it tough. We all know that a lot of this has to do with unsustainably low food prices being peddled by large food chains. When you go to work, you expect to be paid a decent wage for your days work. So do farmers, it's just that we are the ones paying their wage. We can't help every farmer, but we can support one or two in our local area by buying locally, especially at market stands were we can at least ensure the fair price we pay is going straight to that farmer.

So go on, start your weekly shop off by helping to reduce the glut of strawberries and grab a punnet from your local farmer tomorrow. When they look this good you really can't go wrong.

Just in case you have any left overs and are at a loss as to what to do with them, here's a few suggestions from our favourites list.

Spring is upon us! And you know what that means...Spring Cleaning. Woo!

No, not woo.

We love neat and tidy, but there's a real difference between proper clean and basic neat and tidy, just ask our Mother. She's been cleaning walls, ceilings, on top of and underneath furniture, dusting washing and scrubbing from top to bottom at this time for years. With just a touch of mad-woman about her and lashings of your-life-won't-be-worth-living-if-you-dirty-that being thrown at us, we learnt early on that it was best to vacate the premises.

But now of course we have our own premises and much as we would prefer just to vacate and call Mum in, there comes a time that we all have to grow up and clean the toilet ourselves (feel free to take this as a hint Husband).

Sometimes though, the thought of tackling this job forces us to have another cuppa, just to contemplate where exactly to begin. And one cuppa leads to stalking friends on Facebook and then of course you may as well have a wee look on Pinterest, I mean you've gone to all the trouble of turning the computer on so you may as well make it worthwhile...

Don't pretend you haven't done it too. One glance at Pinterest and somehow you've lost 3 hours and developed an almost junkie-like need to keep looking.

Well this is where our pre-plan for Spring Cleaning the project room lead us:

If you follow our Facebook Page then you've probably already seen the Beach House Floor Rug we have been working on. It was ordered by a lovely family who live in a most enviable location right on the beach at the Sunshine Coast.

They were keen for something bright and beachy to wipe off those sandy feet after a wander along the shore. So we jumped right into it...

"Blimey that's bright" was the response we got from our Grandmother. And it was the kicker we were looking for. Nothing in our minds says BEACH more than a bright orange sun with the cool waves in the background.

We used a bright orange starched cotton material, unlike our super soft polyester rugs this one is more firm underfoot. Perfect for rubbing sandy feet on. And as you can see, a big rug needs a big crochet hook - Big Bertha! She's a 20mm style and loves being manhandled.

After some 200 odd meters of material plus the added intensity of Big Bertha you can imagine how much we've learnt about carpal tunnel recently too. But it was worth it. Thrown on the deck overlooking the rock pools and waves beyond, this rug really hit the mark.

We couldn't be more happy with the result. We could've kicked back there with a cocktail in hand, sand between our toes and sun on our cheeks for hours.

Aside from laying out floor rugs and lapping up the view we did a bit of rock pooling with the kids too. But that's another story. Suffice to say that if you can get to the beach as the weather starts warming up we don't think you'll be disappointed.

And if you think you need a Sun Pattern Floor Rug at your place head over to our Etsy Shop - MaggieAndBoyd - but be quick as we only have one left. It is made of the same starched cotton material, 80cm wide and selling for $100 with free shipping.

Unfortunately neither the floor nor bed are visible at the moment.

You know that stockpile of daydreams that just sits quietly in the cupboard waiting patiently for you to come and pick one to work on?.. Well we had a spurt of over-enthusiasm this week and greedily selected more than just one to work with.

So now we'll be setting up a tent in the backyard for our guests...if you're reading this, sorry dudes.

Does everybody have the same random days of chaos (yeah ok, or week) just launch itself upon them? Where no matter how many lists, what kind of pre-planning, or how organised you normally are, you still can't work out how the shampoo got in the fridge and the milk in the shower?

No doubt after a calming glass of chardy, we'll get ourselves sorted out here. But in the mean time I think it's best to focus on a select few. The first of which is a tissue paper wall mobile - that's its current stage on the end of the bed - pink and orange to celebrate the up coming warmer weather of Spring.

We hope that if you happen across one of these random days of chaos at your place, you can take comfort in the fact that you're not alone. Grab a glass of your favourite, kick back and dream on like we do.maggie+boydhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352791368009376761noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848225724177883712.post-42532659828559142942013-07-18T23:05:00.002-07:002013-07-19T02:12:19.440-07:00Winter wander in the ParkWe live in a country with a calendar full of days listed as beautiful one day, perfect the next. So when winter bites the idea of outdoor activities can be slightly less appealing on a cold and dreary day.

But a wander through the park in winter holds just as must interest as in summer. We don't mean a boring adult walk through the park either. We mean a proper child-like scavenge that tickles the senses. It's a different place during the colder winter months, perhaps not as many bright summer colours or sunshine-filled days, but jam packed with textures, sounds and typical winter visions.

You may need to chuck on a beanie or scarf but the crisp air will get your blood pumping in no time and you can be guaranteed the dog will love it no matter what the weather.

Things to keep an eye out for in the winter parklands:

FLOWERS - There are plenty of winter flowering blooms and they vary so much. From the dainty iris to the masses of camellias and the sophisticated magnolias you will see beauty everywhere. Touch them, smell them and most of all describe them like you would to a child - velvety, pastel shades, two-tone, faint aromas, lone rangers. Although manners say we shouldn't pick them, those that have fallen to the ground are definitely fair game.

SEED PODS - Where to start! There are heaps and they are each so very, very different. From the small wafer thin varieties to the round spikey ones and the soft velvety versions, you will run out of adjectives before you run out of interest here.

LEAVES - Winter is possibly the best time to wander through the leaves. All crunchy underfoot, they provide the best audio snippet for a walk in the park. There are heaps of plants that lose their leaves over these cooler months and it's so calming to spend a bit of time checking them out, feeling their dried delicacy, spinning them between your fingers and throwing/ kicking fistfuls into the air. But of course the best activity is mounding them up for the perfect resting spot. Go on, you know you want to.

STICKS - Think big, think twitchy, think walking stick, think sword. It's almost an unconscious act to pick up a stick and give it a twirl. So don't let us hold you back, get scavenging. Find yourself a good stick. Not only are they great for poking amongst the mulch with (to seek out other interesting things) but when combined with leaves and flowers they make amazing sculptural pieces.

We had a blast wandering and scavenging amongst the garden beds. So much so that we brought some of our finds home. There's nothing better than a free, self-made floral arrangement. We like to think it's on the modern art side of decorating.

We're not going to lie, we were worried...scared even about the whole idea. What if nobody liked our stuff? What if our stall was rubbish? What if we were laughed out of town with stones hurled at our backs?? Ok so that might be a little melodramatic.
But none the less it was a really daunting concept. We'd been tossing it around for a while, lots of mates and family telling us we should, but not really certain if it'd work for us.
In the end we decided to just jump in and see what it was like. And what do ya know? We had a ball!

It's actually a lot harder than you think to display 30 odd cushions in sizes up to 65cm square! The usual table setup just didn't work. But we were stoked with the shelving stand that Dad knocked up for us...he's a real gem. And what do think of the fabric strip bunting strung across the back that Mum made?
We were going for a super cosy looking space and we couldn't have been happier with the end result! Some people told us they just wanted to come in and take a load off with a cuppa, that it felt really friendly and just like being at home. Awesome!! That's what we were after!

The cushions looked great and apparently we aren't the only ones that thought so as quite a few went wandering off to new homes. It's so gratifying to have other people like your things so much that they want them at their own home. Makes us all warm and smiley!

We set up a bit of a display to show off our crochet floor rugs.

Those super awesome little chairs were our Grandmother's, used by our Mother and Aunts when they were young, ourselves and our cousins when we were young and now by the latest lot of family whipper-snappers. And of course all the littlies that used them on the day to take a load off while Mum checked out our wares.
What do you think of the little wooden building blocks in the display? They got a heap of interest too, from small hands and big ones alike. We made them for our kids and just added them for show, but perhaps we'll have to knock up a few sets for everyone else as well.

On our Facebook Page there are a few more photos from the day. Included are some fabulous ones taken by Angela Hocking who was the official market photographer for the day on our page also.

At the end of a great market day, with family coming along to help us out throughout the day, we can now say that holding a market stall is not as scary as we first thought (no stone throwing of any kind). We had some amazing stall holders on either side of us - Me & Leigh Creations and Melody Designs - who helped us out with great advice, tips and tricks the whole day long.

So if you came to see us at the markets - THANKS! And if you'd like to see our wares in the flesh then stay tuned to the blog and our Facebook Page as we're super keen to keep it up and take part in more market days all around the country side. Of course you can check our stock out on our Etsy Shop any time you like.maggie+boydhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352791368009376761noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1848225724177883712.post-2875226014819897292013-06-15T00:49:00.000-07:002013-06-15T00:51:32.481-07:00We're OPEN!

They range in size from 45cm square to a super large 65cm square.

We rebel against mass production, its often questionable quality and its high level of wastage - what happens to all those 200+ same-same cushions in the local super store??
What sets our fabulous cushions apart is their uniqueness. We only choose small amounts of fabric to work with not just to reduce our waste but also to ensure you are receiving something special that won't be found in every Tom, Dick and Harry's living room. We try to use up any previous leftover fabrics and buttons on the next just-right project. So every cushion is completely individual and as such would be perfect as a one-off statement piece but even better in a stack.
It also really ticks us off when we get that new gizmo out of it's wrapping just to find it needs batteries. So our cushions come with the inner. None of this cover only business, our cushions are ready to go as soon as the postman drops it off! And to top it off our inners are made of recycled PET fibre from recycled water bottles.

Coming up shortly will be some more grown-up cushions...

There's something wonderfully Australian about a home town Agricultural Show.

It's a place where flannelettes, tweed coats, driza-bones, akubras, steak burgers and a slow Aussie drawl are considered the norm.

But anybody can go to the Show and we reckon everybody should. If not to learn a bit more about your local farmers then to engage with your wider community. And perhaps while you're there you'll find a way of participating with both by taking part in next year's Show.

As you know, we have a pretty big family here at maggie+boyd and this weekend will see quite a few of the clan coming together to help at our home town Show - the Maleny Agricultural Show.

It all started for us back in 1946 when Grandad began competing in horse events.

Gran soon started a food stall to feed the hungry competitors and their judges, keeping them sufficiently full over the 2 day event. It's this horse stall that draws the family home each and every year to lend a hand. Some help in the ring setting up horse jumps and stewarding for the judges, others run the stall and everyone cooks food to bring.

There are a few general rules about going to the Maleny Show -

It will always be cold

It will generally rain at some stage

You should be prepared to work all day and then trot off for a beverage or four at the bar once dark has fallen.

Keeping this in mind we thought we'd help you out with a few fashion essentials if you decide to head out to the Show this winter. Whether you're a seasoned Show goer or new to the day it's a good idea to grab a couple of key pieces that will see you right no matter if you're up hill, down dale or in the city. Back in the day tweed coats, hats and wonderfully paired accessories were all the rage...nothing's really changed.

Sadly we are seeing more and more Ag Shows getting smaller and smaller. It's a real shame to lose that connection to our local farmers, and even more so to lose what to many small towns is one fo the few whole of community gatherings. So we'd like to take the opportunity to tell you how you can get involved and keep your local Show on the up and up.

Most Shows feature Sections for Cattle and Horses and many include Sections for Goats, Angoras, Sheep, Poultry, Pigeons, Caged Birds and Pigs where appropriate and in accordance with local trends. Pavilion exhibits are enormous and include Cut Flowers, Floral Art, Potted Plants, Craft, Cookery, Needlework, Photography and Fine Arts to name but a few. Growing up we entered things each year from chooks to pikelets and artwork. For this show we've entered some crochet items and cut flowers.

It's not really about winning or even about competing, it's more about making sure there are things on display. As kids it was always awesome to wander round with your mates and point out to each other all your different entries, sometimes getting a surprise to see an award certificate sitting next to it! As adults with the next generation under-foot it seems even more important to continue these events and encourage them to take part as well.

To the Hampton High Country Food & Arts Festival. Never been? Oh? Well you should!

You know there are those Food Festivals that are all about the large-scale commercial food brands and the 3 hatted chefs cooking for you and the fancy foodistas? Yeah, those ones that charge an arm and a leg and give you wee morsels of food on fancy plates accompanied by polished glasses of champagne... this isn't like that.

This Festival had me at the front gate. It's more like a Farmers' Market in the sense that great quality, organically grown food in it's raw awesomeness along with the local people (and I mean LOCAL, the majority being from around the Hampton region) that grow it, are being celebrated.

We grabbed a seat and hunkered down against the biting wind to watch a cooking demonstration by Poh Ling Yeow. She used local persimmons from the Perseverance Farming Co. and kale from Homegrown Health. Col Seccombe and Darrin Pateman were on hand to chat with her and us, about their produce, how they grow it and tips on how we could at home too.

Surrounding the event area were no less than 40 odd market stalls (both food and beverage - what would a food festival be without a wine tasting or three) where we could speak to each and every grower, sample their produce and purchase items to take home for cooking, growing or admiring ourselves.
We caught up with friends and family there and between us had a grocery collection of chilli chocolate, coconut ice, blueberry gourmet dessert sauce, verjuice, jerky, sourdough bread, cupcakes, relish, peanuts, dried pasta, persimmons, cider, ground coffee and Verdelho.

With both hands full of Turkish char-grilled chicken kebab, we settled down for a break on a hay bale, relaxing to the tunes coming from The Mill Stage.
Ok so we may have relaxed by the The Mill Stage a few times. There were plates of Filipino and Indian samplings, not to mention the vanilla bean icecream with blueberry sauce or the coffees and vino. But hey, we were at a food festival, as if we could say no.
This time we worked with a few of the youngest members of the clan to make some super sweet Grandmother's and Great-Grandmother's Day presents. With two of each there was a lot of crafting to be done.
Some time back we'd seen these awesome hugs over at Super Mom Moments and it seemed the perfect thing to send to our special ladies.

5 metres of kraft paper later and we had ourselves four hug outlines for each child (each Grandmother and Great-Grandmother received an outline of each child), ready to be painted and cut out.
Here's a shot of the finished product!!

We are maggie+boyd, a daydream emporium.

Daydreaming is pretty much a fulltime hobby for us.
We dream about creating fantastic things from our favourite materials - Textiles, Paper, Wood and Metal.
We've got ourselves a Facebook Page and that's where you'll find our ONLINE SHOP - maggie+boyd SHOP.

We're a product of our eclectic and wonderfully creative family. With four generations to draw inspiration from, maggie+boyd is a small homage to their love, influence and tremendous generosity.
We grew up appreciating the love, time, effort and thought that went in to the many handmade items that we received...a crochet pair of baby booties, wooden cars and trucks, delicious preserves and chutneys, artworks in crayon and in acrylic, plants grown from cuttings and many, many hands-on lessons. These things often became our treasures, kept in special places, conjuring memories to this day. And more importantly many of them have been handed down through the generations, from grandmother to son, father to daughter, cousin to cousin, uncle to nephew...continuing on the love, lessons and memories.

It's that idea of making things that capture the imagination of multiple generations that really drives us. We want to create special things that will become your future heirlooms. Things that you will have passed down through the generations with stories both old and new being told about them.

This is where we'll bring you our dreamings. Some will be good, some will be disasters and a few pearlers will knock your socks off!
